Eine neapolitanische Geschichte
„Edenlandia“, so heißt ein Vergnügungspark in Neapel, eine Mischung aus Zoo, Rummelplatz und Disneyland auf Italienisch. Halb ironisch und halb mythisierend übernimmt Vincen Beeckman diesen paradiesisch anmutenden Titel für die Ausstellung von Bildern, die er auf seinen Streifzügen durch Neapel aufgenommen hat. Auf den ersten Blick wird deutlich: ein Paradies im klassischen Sinne ist diese Stadt nicht. Vielmehr gleicht sie einem chaotischen Universum zwischen Verwüstung, Verfall, Resten vergangener Pracht und rauschhaften Festen der Nacht. Die öffentliche Infrastruktur, wie Müllabfuhr oder Nahverkehr, ist immer nahe am völligen Zusammenbruch, umso stärker agiert die Mafia in dieser am Abgrund zur Anarchie taumelnden Stadt. Verbindlich ist nichts, möglich fast alles. Auf sich selbst gestellt, improvisieren die Menschen sich so durchs Leben.
Ohne Vorurteile, ohne vorgefertigtes Konzept und ohne eine etablierte Zielgruppe im Kopf zu haben, hat Vincen Beeckman Neapel durchwandert und sich dabei von den Begegnungen, die der Zufall ihm zutrug, leiten lassen. Vom spanischen Quartier bis zu den den Höhen des Vesuvs, von den Bars im Zentrum bis zur Peripherie ist er umhergestreift und hat eine innere Verbindung zu dieser mythischen Stadt geknüpft. Mit Porträts, Stillleben und Landschaften teilt er die markierenden Impressionen seiner Umherwanderungen mit. Er zeigt Ansichten und örtliche Situationen, die nichts vordergründig Spektakuläres darstellen, aber tief im Alltag verankert sind, dem ganz normalen Ausnahmezustand dieser Stadt.
Vincen Beeckman (*1973) ist ein Belgischer Fotograf und einer der Mitbegründer des ehemaligen Kollektivs BlowUp und dem O.S.T. collective. Beeckman arbeitet auch als Kurator unter anderem bei Recyclart und arbeitet zusammen mit Bozar, Wiels und der Fondation A. In Belgien wird er von der Galerie Cerami / Charleroi vertreten, in der Schweiz von der Galerie Eulenspiegel / Basel. Seine Arbeiten wurden unter anderem im RIP Arles, bei der Photo Espana, Musée du Botanique, im Fotomuseum Antwerpen und im Centro Arte National Napoli gezeigt. Er lebt und arbeitet in Brüssel.

Eine neapolitanische Geschichte
Edenlandia is the name of an amusement park in Naples. It is a combination of a zoo, fair ground and Disneyland. In an ironic and mystifying way Belgian photographer Vincen Beeckman adopts this seemingly paradisiacal title for his exhibition of images that he captured during his travels through the city of Naples.
What becomes evident at the very first sight of the photographs: a paradise in its original meaning this town is not. The place seems to be more of a chaotic universe that meanders between desolation, decay, remnants of bygone splendour and ecstatic nightly feasts. The public infrastructure, such as the daily rubbish collection or public transportation, is constantly on the verge of breaking down whereas the mafia seems to be the strongest functioning operation in this town dangling on the brink of anarchy. Everything is possible, yet nothing is mandatory in this town and being left to their own devices, the inhabitants of this city somehow shift themselves through life.
Vincen Beeckman has wandered Naples clear of any prejudice and without a pre-cast concept. He has let random encounters lead his way without a clear vision of a certain group of people. From the Spanish quarter to the heights of the Vesuvius, from the bars in the centre to the periphery, Vincen Beeckman has roamed this city and made an inner alliance with this mystical place.
Through portraits, still lives and landscapes he shows us his personal, powerful and striking impressions of his expeditions. He depicts views of the city and vernacular conditions that seemingly do not show anything ostensibly spectacular but are deeply rooted in this town’s everyday life in a constant state of exception.
Vincen Beeckman (*1973) is a Belgian photographer and curator and one of the founders and member of the former collective BlowUp as well as O.S.T. collective. He works as a curator at Recyclart and collaborates with Bozar, Wiels and Fondation A. He is represented by Galerie Cerami / Charleroi and Galerie Eulenspiegel / Basel. His work has been shown in RIP Arles, Photo Espana, Musée du Botanique, Fotomuseum Antwerpen and Centro Arte National Napoli (amongst others). He lives and works in Brussels.
