Parallel zur großen ZERO-Ausstellung im Martin-Gropius-Bau und zum Start des diesjährigen
Gallery Weekend lädt die Galerie pavlov’s dog zur Wiederentdeckung des Berliner Fotografen
Lothar Wolleh ein. Durch seine intensive Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlern der ZERO-Gruppe –
darunter Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, Günther Uecker, Lucio Fontana und Jean Tinguely – ist eine
zeitlose Serie von Porträts entstanden, die in einer komprimierten Auswahl von 24 Arbeiten nun
erstmals in Berlin zu sehen sein wird.

Lothar Wolleh (1930 – 1979) gehörte zu den erfolgreichsten Werbefotografen der
Bundesrepublik, bevor er Ende der 1960er-Jahre auf Anregung seines Freundes Günther Uecker
begann, international bekannte Maler, Bildhauer und Aktionisten zu porträtieren. Mit einem
instinktiven Gespür für die individuellen Eigenarten der Künstler und einem streng
symmetrischen Bildaufbau schuf Wolleh Aufnahmen, die einen Blick in das Innere der
Porträtierten, oft während des künstlerischen Prozesses, gewähren und zu den eindrücklichsten
Positionen der Fotokunst des 20. Jahrhunderts zählen.

Lothar Wolleh – The ZERO-artists

Parallel to the big ZERO retrospective at Martin-Gropius Bau and for the start of this year’s
Gallery Weekend Berlin, pavlov’s dog will present the re-discovered works of Berlin
photographer Lothar Wolleh. Through his intense collaboration with the ZERO Group –
including artists such as Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, Günther Uecker, Lucio Fontana and Jean
Tinguely – Wolleh was able to produce a timeless series of portraits of these artists. A selection of
24 works will be shown for the first time in Berlin at pavlov’s dog.

Lothar Wolleh (1930 – 1979) was one of the most successful commercial photographers of West
Germany before he started to photograph internationally well-known painters, sculptors and
action artists after following the suggestion of his friend Günther Uecker. With his eye for details
and his visceral sense for the personal idiosyncrasies of each artist and a strictly symmetrical
composition Wolleh was able to create photographs that show a glimpse of the inner self of the
portrayed. Often photographed while working, during the creative process these photographs
represent some of the most impressive positions of photographic art of the 20th century.
